The American Academy of Pediatrics has renewed its call for a ban on the sale and distribution of raw milk and other unpasteurised dairy products in the United States.
The group said raw milk can carry harmful pathogens and may also pose a risk linked to H5N1 avian influenza. It identified young children, pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers among those at greater risk of serious infections.
Research cited in the updated guidance indicates that H5N1 can be transferred from infected dairy cattle into milk, where the virus can remain detectable in refrigerated raw milk for several weeks.
The academy said infectious H5N1 was detected in nearly one-quarter of raw milk samples collected from affected areas during the 2024 US dairy outbreak. However, there are no confirmed human cases linked to consuming raw milk.
The AAP also said raw milk can contain bacteria such as Listeria, E. coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter and Brucella. It recommends pasteurised dairy products, saying pasteurisation significantly reduces these health risks without removing the nutritional value of milk.
