The Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy has pledged support for the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food for Progress Programme in Nigeria.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Fatima Sugra Tabi’a Mahmood, made the commitment when she received a delegation from Partners of the Americas, the programme’s implementing partner, led by Mr. Gustavo Galdo in Abuja.
Mahmood said the ministry would provide policy guidance, institutional support and coordination to ensure effective implementation of the programme.
She said developing Nigeria’s fisheries and aquaculture sector is important to food security, job creation and poverty reduction, noting that increased fish production could improve livelihoods and create opportunities across the value chain.
Galdo said the programme is designed to improve productivity, strengthen resilience and support sustainable growth in Nigeria’s fisheries and aquaculture industry.
He identified access to quality inputs and finance, stronger markets, improved productivity and increased private-sector participation as key areas of intervention.
Galdo also disclosed that baseline studies are underway to identify gaps and opportunities in the sector and guide targeted interventions.
Both sides agreed to maintain collaboration to ensure the programme aligns with Nigeria’s priorities and supports fishers, aquaculture operators, processors, marketers and other value-chain players.
