Libya Investigates Death of More Than 150 Sheep in Southern Tunisia

Libya’s National Center for Animal Health is investigating the deaths of more than 150 sheep in the Metlaoui area of Gafsa Province, southern Tunisia.

The centre is working with Tunisian authorities to determine what caused the deaths and assess any possible veterinary and public health risks.

The head of the centre, Dr. Mohamed Al-Uqab, said preliminary information points to possible phosphate contamination of water in the grazing areas.

He said several factories operate around the areas where sheep are commonly grazed.

Tunisian veterinary authorities have started their own investigation and collected samples from the dead sheep and nearby herds. The samples have been sent to specialised laboratories to establish the cause of death and identify the possible source.

Dr. Al-Uqab said the centre is also awaiting a final report from the World Organisation for Animal Health.

He added that the current situation does not require public concern or additional measures, but said monitoring and coordination with Tunisian authorities would continue until the investigation is concluded.
