Bauchi Halts Enforcement of Livestock Route Policy

The Bauchi State Government has suspended the enforcement of its livestock right-of-way policy following concerns over how and when the policy was being implemented.

Governor Bala Mohammed announced the suspension during a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House.

He said the policy, supported by an Executive Order and state legislation, was introduced to create designated livestock routes and reduce conflicts between farmers and livestock breeders.

The governor raised concerns over the use of chemicals to clear the livestock routes, warning that they could harm animals and crops, especially as farmers prepare for harvest after investing heavily in their farms.

Mohammed said enforcement should have started earlier, stressing the need for proper consultation, public sensitisation and consideration for the livelihoods of affected communities.

Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government, Aminu Hammayo, said a committee had been set up to engage relevant ministries, agencies, farmers, livestock groups and other stakeholders.

He said the committee would sensitise the public and work toward proper implementation of the policy before enforcement resumes.

The meeting was attended by traditional rulers, farmers’ and livestock associations, commodity groups, security agencies and members of the State Executive Council.
