Abeokuta North Enforces New Grazing Rules, Expands Community Projects

Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State has introduced new regulations to control livestock activities and reduce conflicts between farmers and herders.

The council’s new bye-law bans open grazing and makes the registration of herders and livestock owners compulsory. The measure is aimed at protecting farmland, improving public safety and promoting peaceful coexistence among residents.

The council recently held a sensitisation programme involving traditional rulers, community leaders, farmers, herders, security agencies, market associations, transport unions and youth groups. Stakeholders were briefed on the new livestock regulations, as well as rules against indiscriminate waste disposal, encroachment on government property and illegal occupation of public land.

Meanwhile, the council has commissioned projects across its 16 wards and four major communities, including roads, schools, healthcare facilities, rural electrification, water and sanitation projects.

Council Chairman, Olanrewaju Ayodeji Oyegbola-Sodipo, said the administration believes development must include effective laws and public participation. He said the livestock bye-law would help protect agricultural investments while allowing farmers and herders to coexist peacefully.

Ogun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, commended the council’s projects, describing the investments as part of efforts to improve governance at the grassroots.
