African Summit Explores AI Use in Animal Health

Vet Konect, in partnership with Dubai-based Nova Vet Family, has hosted the first African Animal Health Artificial Intelligence Summit to examine the role of AI in veterinary practice and livestock development across the continent.

The two-day virtual summit brought together veterinarians, researchers, educators, policymakers, students, technology experts and other stakeholders from Africa and beyond. Discussions focused on how AI can improve disease surveillance, strengthen livestock production, support research and expand access to quality animal healthcare. Participants agreed that AI should support veterinarians in decision-making and service delivery, not replace them.

Speaking at the opening, Vet Konect Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Terese Shadrach Akpem, urged animal health professionals to embrace technology to address the shortage of veterinary personnel in Africa. He also called for stronger collaboration among governments, universities, professional bodies, technology companies and development partners to promote responsible AI adoption.

Speakers at the summit demonstrated AI-powered tools for clinical decision support, medical documentation and other veterinary services. Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association President, Dr. Moses Arokoyo, said improved digital infrastructure and public-private partnerships are needed to expand AI use in Africa. Organisers said the summit created a platform for collaboration and marked the start of wider efforts to promote responsible AI adoption in the continent's animal health sector.
