The Sabah government will provide a one-time animal feed assistance package to small-scale pig farmers to help lower production costs and increase livestock output.
Sabah Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industry Minister Datuk Jamawi Jaafar said the support will target farmers raising fewer than 50 pigs. He noted that pig farmers had previously not received the same level of assistance given to other livestock sectors.
Jamawi said the Sabah Department of Veterinary Services has been directed to make provisions for the programme, which will be implemented soon.
He explained that the support comes as rising pork prices continue to affect consumers. According to the minister, the cost of smoked pork products has increased significantly in recent months.
Jamawi also attributed the higher prices to reduced wild boar supply following a hunting ban introduced two years ago after an outbreak of swine fever.
To help meet local demand, he said the state government has approved six companies to import pork from countries including Denmark and Norway.
The minister added that imported supplies arriving monthly are expected to help stabilise the market while efforts continue to support local pig producers.
