Mexico Targets Higher Milk Output to Reduce Import Dependence

Mexico’s dairy industry is working with the federal government to increase national milk production and reduce reliance on imports, with a target of reaching 15 billion litres annually by 2030.

The country currently produces about 13.8 billion litres of milk, meeting roughly 70 percent of domestic demand. The remaining 30 percent is supplied through imports, mainly milk powder from the United States.

Speaking ahead of World Milk Day, leaders in the dairy sector said milk consumption in Mexico remains below recommended levels. Industry officials reported that the average Mexican consumes 148 litres of milk per year, compared to 166 litres of sugary drinks.

To support production growth, the government has launched new investments and infrastructure projects, including a milk processing plant in Campeche. The facility, built with an investment of more than 130 million pesos, is expected to strengthen dairy supply and support small-scale producers through improved pricing and technical assistance.

Industry leaders said the dairy sector generates about 600,000 direct jobs and one million indirect jobs, making it a key contributor to rural economies.

Producers say increasing milk output will improve food security, strengthen the dairy value chain and reduce Mexico’s dependence on imported dairy products over the coming years.
