Marine Heatwaves Raise Concerns Over Ghana’s Fish Production

Rising ocean temperatures are increasing pressure on Ghana's fisheries sector, with experts warning that marine heatwaves are affecting fish populations, fish farming and the livelihoods of coastal communities.

Researchers say marine heatwaves, which occur when sea temperatures remain above normal levels for several days, have become more frequent and intense in the Gulf of Guinea in recent years. The changes are influencing fish migration patterns, increasing disease risks and reducing catches in some fishing areas.

Climate and fisheries experts noted that fishermen and fish farmers are facing additional challenges from overfishing, marine pollution and habitat degradation, making it harder for fish stocks to recover.

They warned that lower fish catches could affect food security, increase fish prices and threaten jobs in communities that depend on fishing for income.

Fish farmers also reported that extreme temperature changes can trigger diseases that lead to heavy losses in aquaculture operations.

To strengthen marine conservation, Ghana recently established its first Marine Protected Area in the Greater Cape Three Points region to support biodiversity and fish stock recovery.

Experts say improved research, monitoring systems and sustainable fisheries management will be essential to protect marine resources and support the long-term growth of Ghana's fisheries sector.
