ASF Outbreak Destroys Pig Farms, Farmers Demand Insurance Support in Bhutan

An outbreak of African Swine Fever has caused major losses for pig farmers in Bhutan, with about 22 farmers affected in Damzhagsa under Norbugang Gewog in Samtse.

According to local records, the outbreak killed about 211 pigs, wiping out several pig farms and cutting off a major source of household income for many families. Farmers said the losses came at a time when pig farming profits were already falling due to weak market demand.

Authorities ordered the culling of remaining pigs to stop the spread of the disease. However, affected farmers said the measure left them without livestock or income, while many still face loan repayments and other debts linked to their farms.

Farmers are now calling for changes to compensation rules and the introduction of livestock insurance. Under the current system, compensation is only provided for pigs culled before infection spreads, leaving many farmers without support after losing entire herds.

One farmer, Karney Rai, said he lost 53 pigs after years of investment in his farm and now struggles to recover financially. Another farmer, Dhan Kumar Rai, said he lost 18 pigs despite borrowing money to expand his business.

Farmers said the outbreak has reduced confidence in pig farming and exposed the lack of protection for livestock producers during disease outbreaks. They are urging the government to introduce broader compensation and insurance measures to support rural farmers during future crises.
