NT Boosts Livestock Biosecurity with $1m Funding Increase

The Northern Territory Government has announced a $1 million funding increase to strengthen livestock biosecurity operations and support the supply chain. Four new livestock biosecurity officers will also be deployed as part of the plan, which forms part of the 2026–27 budget.

Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Gerard Maley said the funding is aimed at improving frontline biosecurity work and protecting an industry that supports jobs, exports, and regional development. He said biosecurity is important for maintaining market access and protecting herd health.

According to Maley, strong systems are needed to ensure confidence across the livestock supply chain. He said the government is focusing on growth, stability, and security for the cattle sector.

The funding will also support a new traceability and compliance unit, the digitisation of NT livestock waybills, and improved preparation for emergency animal disease outbreaks. It will also assist police efforts to investigate livestock theft.

The government says the investment will improve compliance and make livestock movement more efficient from farms to export points. The Northern Territory budget is scheduled to be presented on May 5.
