The Federal Government says it is intensifying efforts to develop Nigeria’s livestock sector while cutting emissions under the National Livestock Growth Acceleration Strategy, NL-GAS. The move is part of broader plans to align livestock production with national climate targets.
The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, said the strategy now includes climate-sensitive planning. She spoke in Abuja at a stakeholders’ workshop focused on developing a framework for the plan.
Akujobi said the initiative marks a transition from subsistence livestock production to a more commercial, efficient, and resilient system. She noted that the approach will address both emission reduction and adaptation to climate risks such as land degradation and changing weather patterns.
She added that the livestock sector contributes between three and five percent to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product, with an estimated value of 32 billion dollars. According to her, millions of Nigerians rely on the sector for income, food, and livelihoods.
Officials said the plan will also expand opportunities across the value chain, including dairy, meat, leather, processing, and veterinary services. Development partners such as the International Livestock Research Institute, FAO, GIZ, and others are supporting efforts to develop and implement the framework.
