The Center for Gender Economics in Africa (CGE Africa) has held a two-day Joint Summit and Onboarding Workshop under its Future Women Leaders in Fisheries Fellowship (FUWOLIFF) to support young women studying fisheries and aquaculture.
The workshop, held from March 12 to 13, 2026, brought together newly selected undergraduate fellows and postgraduate fellows from the 2025 cohort from universities across Nigeria. The initiative aims to strengthen women’s participation and leadership in the fisheries and aquaculture sector as part of efforts to promote gender inclusion in Nigeria’s blue economy.
The event forms part of CGE Africa’s project titled “Fostering Women’s Leadership in Fisheries and Aquaculture for Climate Change Resilience in Nigeria.” Activities at the summit included orientation sessions, leadership training, and interactive discussions designed to introduce participants to opportunities in the sector and prepare them for leadership roles.
In her opening remarks, the Executive Director of CGE Africa, Uchenna Idoko, said the blue economy is becoming increasingly important and urged the fellows to take the programme seriously. She encouraged participants to learn from sector specialists and use the opportunity to build their skills.
The workshop also featured an experience-sharing session where postgraduate fellows spoke about how the fellowship influenced their academic and leadership development, including increased confidence, research involvement, and participation in community initiatives.
