Oyo Launches Statewide Livestock Vaccination Exercise

The Oyo State Government has flagged off a statewide mass livestock vaccination campaign to improve animal health and livestock productivity across the state. The exercise is also aimed at protecting farmers’ livelihoods and strengthening the livestock sector.

The flag-off of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) vaccination campaign took place on March 16, 2026. The event was held at the Odo-Eran area of Eruwa in Ibarapa East Local Government Area.

The campaign targets more than 300,000 livestock across the 33 local government areas of Oyo State. It aims to reduce diseases such as Foot and Mouth Disease, Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia and Newcastle Disease.

The vaccination exercise began across the state on March 9, 2026.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Adviser to the Governor on Agribusiness and Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency, Dr. Debo Akande, said the programme shows the commitment of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to livestock development.

He said the state government is carrying out coordinated vaccination across all local government areas to protect livestock from common diseases. Akande urged livestock farmers to present their animals for vaccination and support government programmes aimed at strengthening the livestock sector.

The Chairman of the Oyo State House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture, Hon. Peter Ojedokun, also called on farmers to support the vaccination exercise, noting that it will help improve livestock farming and increase farmers’ income.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, represented by the Deputy Director in the ministry, Dr. Alibu Semiu, said the livestock sector remains important to the state’s agricultural economy.

He said the L-PRES project supports animal health services through mass vaccination and engagement with livestock farmers.

According to him, the state recorded success in a previous L-PRES vaccination campaign against anthrax. He said the current exercise will vaccinate large animals against CBPP and Foot and Mouth Disease, while poultry will receive vaccination against Newcastle Disease.

Speaking on behalf of Fulani livestock farmers in Ibarapa land, Bello Saliu thanked the state government for including pastoralist communities in the programme.

He urged farmers to present their animals for vaccination to prevent disease outbreaks.

Dignitaries at the event included the Oyo State L-PRES Coordinator, Alhaji Kola Kazeem; L-PRES Project Engineer, Engr. Peter Kolawole; Chief of Staff to Ibarapa East Local Government, Alhaji Olatunji Kasal; and Directors of Agriculture from Ibarapa East and Ibarapa Local Government Areas.
