Türkiye Halts Chicken Meat Exports Ahead of Ramadan Over Price Rise

Türkiye has suspended chicken meat exports ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan to stabilise domestic prices and prevent increases authorities described as unjustified.

The move followed reports that poultry producers and sellers raised prices by up to 15 percent before Ramadan, prompting government intervention to protect the local market.

The Trade Ministry said the step is intended to support the supply-demand balance and reduce volatility in food prices.

Ramadan, expected to begin next week, is a period when food demand often rises as Muslims fast from dawn to sunset and gather for meals after fasting.

Türkiye has previously introduced temporary trade measures before Ramadan to manage inflation and ensure steady supply of essential goods.

Official data show annual inflation eased to 30.65 percent in January, though food prices remain a major contributor to inflation.

The ministry said developments affecting food markets, rising domestic demand and seasonal consumption changes have influenced poultry prices. It added that the poultry market is being closely monitored and export suspension measures have taken effect.

Authorities also said inspections and sanctions will continue against pricing practices considered exploitative or disruptive to the market.
