Sokoto L-PRES Opens 10,000-Capacity Cold Room to Support Poultry Trade

The Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project in Sokoto State has commissioned a 10,000-capacity poultry cold room at the Live Bird Market in Sokoto. The market serves as a major centre where residents buy poultry for consumption and commercial use. It also operates as a processing point where sellers keep birds before distribution.

Traders said the absence of a cold storage facility had created serious challenges in the market. They said inconsistent demand, especially during festive periods, caused large quantities of processed poultry to spoil daily. The new facility is designed to store up to 10,000 processed birds each day to reduce waste and improve business operations.

Speaking at the handover to the Poultry Sellers Association, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries Development, Abubakar Mohammed Yabo, said the Sokoto State Government remains committed to supporting poultry businesses through the L-PRES project.
