Livestock Ministry, Military Join Forces to Boost Food Security

The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has announced a partnership with the Nigerian Armed Forces to increase livestock production and support national food security. The collaboration was disclosed by the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, during a meeting in Abuja.

The minister said the partnership will begin with technical assessments of military farm formations across the country. The aim is to review existing livestock operations, identify gaps, and provide support to improve productivity and self-sufficiency.

He said the ministry will carry out on-site visits to align livestock interventions with national food security goals. The plan is to help the Armed Forces meet their food needs while contributing to national supply.

Maiha also said an integrated grazing reserve model has been developed, starting in Wase, Plateau State. The project includes roads, settlements, veterinary clinics, dams, and designated crop and pasture areas to support ranching.

Defence Holding Company Limited said it is expanding agricultural activities, including livestock farming, to improve food security. The company requested technical support for about 1,000 hectares of livestock and agricultural facilities in Wase.
