FG Introduces Livestock Based Peace Plan in Benue

The Federal Government has introduced a livestock-based peace strategy to restore stability and support economic growth in Benue State. The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, announced this at the inauguration of the Benue State Commission for Peace and Reconciliation during the Benue Peace Summit in Makurdi on Wednesday. He said the plan aims to promote security, create jobs, and support rural development.

The minister said years of farmer-herder conflicts have led to loss of lives, displacement of communities, and reduced agricultural production in the state. He said clashes linked to open grazing, cattle rustling, reprisals, and the decline of traditional conflict resolution systems require lasting economic solutions. He said the Peace Commission will help stabilise rural communities and promote livestock production as a source of shared economic benefit.

Maiha said more than 13 livestock facilities in Benue are in poor condition. He said the Federal Government will work with the Benue State Government through a Public-Private Partnership to rehabilitate and modernise the facilities into Livestock Service Centres. Facilities listed for rehabilitation include the Yandev Pig Progeny Centre, small ruminant ranches, abandoned abattoirs, pasture development zones, and other livestock infrastructure.

He said the rehabilitation will support livestock value chains and create jobs for young people. He said opportunities will be created in pig breeding, small ruminant fattening, feedlot operations, meat processing, and pasture production. He added that the livestock programme will help improve food security and support economic activities in the state.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Sam Ode, said the Benue State Strategic Plan for Peace and Reconciliation for 2026 to 2030 was developed through consultations. He said the plan focuses on dialogue, justice, early warning systems, and conflict prevention. Development partners and traditional rulers called for stronger support for Benue and the safe return of displaced persons to their communities.
