The Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) said on Tuesday it received 10 Holstein-Friesian bulls from cattle breeders in Germany. The bulls will be used under the national artificial insemination programme to improve milk production.

RAB said the bulls have genetic potential to produce offspring yielding more than 10,000 litres of milk per lactation, above current national averages.

The board said the delivery marks progress in efforts to improve cattle genetics and livestock productivity.

RAB said a further 20 high-genetic-merit bulls will be imported in April 2026. The next batch will include Holstein-Friesian, Jersey and Brown Swiss breeds for dairy production, as well as Angus and Charolais for beef production.

The board said the imports will increase the quality and volume of bovine semen produced locally and expand access to improved genetics.

The programme also supports the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Bovine Genetic Improvement at Songa in Huye District. The centre will focus on artificial insemination, embryo transfer, training and research.

RAB said the initiative aligns with national agriculture and development plans aimed at increasing milk production by the 2028/2029 period.

The board said improved access to high-quality semen will benefit farmers by reducing the cost of acquiring improved cattle genetics.
