Lagos Poultry Farmers Dismiss Reports of Egg Scarcity

Poultry farmers in Lagos have moved to calm public concerns, insisting that eggs remain readily available across the state despite reports suggesting shortages in some areas.

The Poultry Association of Nigeria, Lagos State chapter, says egg production has remained stable, with farms supplying the market without disruption. The association’s chairman, Mojeed Iyiola, explained that the state is currently experiencing a surplus rather than a shortage.

He noted that farmers deliberately pushed large quantities of eggs into the market during the end-of-year period to prevent oversupply. Between December 31 and the New Year, crates of eggs were sold across the association’s eight zones at prices ranging from ₦4,800 to ₦5,000, below the usual farm gate rates.

According to Iyiola, situations where eggs appear unavailable in some locations are likely linked to traders’ inability to restock, possibly due to financial constraints or unresolved debts to suppliers, rather than any breakdown in production.

He added that prices have remained relatively low following earlier intervention by the Lagos State Government to ease pressure on consumers. Although that support has been suspended for now, discussions are ongoing for renewed assistance ahead of the Easter season, which could lead to further reductions in the prices of eggs and chicken across the state.
