Gov Inuwa Moves to Secure Water Backbone for Gombe’s Agro-Livestock Economic Zone

Reliable water supply has taken centre stage in Gombe State’s agro-industrial ambitions as Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya directed the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) project to fast-track a comprehensive water system for the state’s Agro-Livestock Development Zone.

Following the governor’s directive, water-supply consultants have been engaged to design a full-scale system for the 180-hectare zone, a flagship project envisioned as a major driver of economic transformation. The sprawling development already hosts multiple high-impact facilities under construction, including an ultramodern abattoir, an international livestock market, a tannery and leather factory, international grains and timber markets, and an inland dry port.

That move, officials say, reflects the administration’s resolve to ensure the zone begins operations fully functional rather than struggling with basic infrastructure. The consultants’ mandate is to lay the groundwork for uninterrupted water access needed to power livestock processing, food production and industrial activities.

Technical engagement sessions have since brought together key ministries and agencies such as Water Resources, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Environment, and the Office of the State Surveyor-General, helping to align data, surveys and technical requirements for the water system.

Gombe L-PRES State Project Coordinator, Professor Usman Bello Abubakar, described the step as a clear demonstration of hands-on leadership, praising Governor Inuwa Yahaya for prioritising infrastructure crucial to livelihoods and long-term growth. He underscored that steady water supply will be the lifeline of the abattoir, livestock market, processing plants and other facilities expected to anchor the state’s agro-livestock economy.

Guided by L-PRES technical staff, the consultants toured the entire zone, mapping routes, taking measurements and carrying out preliminary engineering assessments needed for a detailed water-supply masterplan. Their findings and recommendations are to be submitted to the governor for approval.

Once completed, the water infrastructure is expected to deliver sustainable and reliable supply across the Agro-Livestock Development Zone, reinforcing Gombe’s position as a regional hub for livestock, agriculture and trade while unlocking broader economic gains for the state and beyond.
