FAO and Nigeria Join Forces to Create Livestock Disease-Free Zones and Boost Global Trade

Nigeria is stepping up efforts to transform its livestock industry through a renewed partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The collaboration aims to establish livestock disease-free zones across the country — a move that promises to protect animal health, strengthen trade, and elevate Nigeria’s standing in the global livestock market.

During a high-level meeting in Rome, FAO Director-General Dr. QU Dongyu and Nigeria’s Minister of Livestock Development, Alhaji Idi Mukhtar, discussed strategies to modernize the sector. Their talks focused on improving disease surveillance, strengthening animal health infrastructure, promoting better feed and fodder systems, and advancing breed improvement initiatives.

Minister Mukhtar described the creation of disease-free zones as a game-changer for the nation’s livestock transformation plan. He explained that safeguarding animal health would open Nigeria to new regional and international markets, making the country a credible player in global livestock trade.

The partnership also seeks to revitalise grazing reserves, promote climate-smart livestock practices, and enhance capacity building throughout the value chain. These measures are expected to drive productivity, improve food and nutrition security, and uplift millions of Nigerians who depend on livestock for their livelihoods.

Dr. Dongyu reaffirmed FAO’s full support for Nigeria’s vision, emphasizing that disease-free zones are crucial for meeting international sanitary standards and unlocking access to high-value export markets. Both parties agreed to work closely from planning through implementation to ensure the initiatives are inclusive, sustainable, and aligned with international best practices.

This renewed alliance signals a major step in Nigeria’s journey to modernize its livestock industry, reduce the spread of transboundary animal diseases, and position the country as a leading livestock powerhouse in Africa and beyond.
