Ekiti Set to Launch Commercial Goat Farming Hub in Otun Ekiti

Ekiti State is preparing to transform livestock production with the establishment of a commercial goat farming hub in Otun Ekiti, Moba Local Government Area. The project, driven by the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES) initiative, is designed to modernize the goat and sheep value chain while improving the livelihoods of rural farmers.

State Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr. Olayinka Adedipe, said the choice of Otun Ekiti was deliberate, given its reputation as a vibrant hub for sheep and goat trade that already attracts buyers from across Nigeria. He explained that the facility would build on this advantage, expanding commerce in a cleaner, more organized, and profitable environment for farmers and the government alike.

The hub will serve as a model for modern goat farming, providing access to improved breeds, veterinary care, and training in best husbandry practices. Beyond production, it will function as a centre for knowledge and skill transfer, equipping farmers to compete more effectively in structured markets.

L-PRES Value Chain Officer, Mrs. Adenike Omoleye, stressed that the project is about much more than boosting productivity. According to her, the hub will connect farmers to new opportunities, supplying inputs, offering veterinary services, and facilitating aggregation, processing, and distribution that link producers directly to both local and international buyers.

Community leaders have welcomed the initiative with enthusiasm. The Oore of Otun Ekiti, Oba Adekunle Adeagbo, expressed gratitude to the state government for siting the project in his town and pledged the support of the traditional institution in ensuring its sustainability. He noted that the hub would open new streams of income for farmers and create vital job opportunities for young people in the area.

The goat hub forms part of the broader L-PRES programme, a partnership between the World Bank, federal, and state governments aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s livestock sector and positioning it for long-term growth.
