Kosovo Races to Contain Dangerous Livestock Disease Outbreak

A serious livestock disease outbreak has struck the village of Landovicë near Prizren, prompting swift emergency action from Kosovo’s Food and Veterinary Agency (FVA). The agency has confirmed the presence of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), a fast-spreading viral disease that affects sheep and goats and poses a major threat to the country’s agricultural economy.

Veterinary officials acted quickly to quarantine the affected farm and establish a three-kilometer exclusion zone around it. While tests from surrounding farms have so far returned negative results, authorities aren’t taking any chances. Strict biosecurity measures have been introduced, and all animal movement and trade in the area have been immediately halted to prevent further spread.

In an effort to stop the disease in its tracks, the FVA has extended restrictions nationwide, halting the transport and sale of sheep and goats across the country. Infected animals are being buried on site, and farmers are being instructed to report any suspected cases without delay.

Although PPR does not affect humans, it can cause severe illness and death in animals, and its economic toll on farmers can be devastating. The FVA emphasized that the country must act decisively to protect its livestock industry and preserve rural livelihoods. As Kosovo works to contain the outbreak, veterinary teams remain on high alert, and authorities are urging continued vigilance and cooperation from the farming community.
