Argentina reports avian influenza in domestic birds

Argentina has confirmed a new case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in backyard poultry in Chaco province. The detection follows laboratory analysis of samples from chickens, turkeys, and ducks in Tres Isletas.

This marks the first reported case since the major 2023 outbreak, which led to a suspension of exports and the culling of over 630,000 chickens.

Following confirmation, Argentina’s National Food Safety and Quality Service (Senasa) activated its sanitary protocol, which includes depopulating the affected area, implementing disinfection measures, and preventing further spread.

However, Senasa reassured that the presence of the virus in backyard poultry does not impact Argentina’s sanitary status or poultry trade. The agency urged poultry farms to enhance biosecurity measures, such as housing birds in protected areas, keeping them away from wild birds, and regularly disinfecting enclosures.

Since 2021, HPAI has spread rapidly across Europe, Asia, and Africa, with Latin America also experiencing outbreaks. Countries including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, and Uruguay have reported cases, primarily in wild and backyard poultry but not in commercial flocks. Authorities have ramped up surveillance, border controls, and preventive actions to curb the virus’s spread.

As part of ongoing efforts, Argentina continues monitoring poultry populations and enforcing strict hygiene measures. While the latest case raises concerns, officials maintain that Argentina’s poultry industry remains stable, with no immediate threat to exports or commercial farming operations.
