The Presidential Committee on Implementation of Livestock Reforms is set to submit its report to President Bola Tinubu in two weeks, August 7, 2024. According to Professor Attahiru Jega, co-chairman of the committee and former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the report will outline recommendations for the implementation of livestock reforms, including ranching and other initiatives to enhance the economy.
The committee was inaugurated by President Tinubu in July, with a mandate to develop a comprehensive plan for the livestock sector. The President has expressed his commitment to implementing the committee's recommendations, which are expected to address the decades-long farmer-herder crisis and promote agricultural productivity.
Speaking at a briefing at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, Jega said that the committee is working diligently to present a well-thought-through report to the President. "We think that maximum in the next two weeks, we should be able to present a report to Mr. President, from which we can then begin the process of actual implementation," he said.
The committee's report is expected to recommend the creation of a new Ministry of Livestock Development, which will be responsible for implementing the reforms. The ministry is expected to play a key role in promoting the livestock sector, creating jobs, and enhancing food security.
The farmer-herder crisis, which has claimed over 60,000 lives since 2001, has been a major challenge for the country. The crisis is characterized by conflicts between herders and farmers over land and resources, leading to loss of lives and property.
The implementation of livestock reforms is expected to address the root causes of the crisis and promote peace and stability in the affected regions. The reforms are also expected to promote agricultural productivity, create jobs, and enhance food security.
The committee's report is expected to be a comprehensive plan for the livestock sector, outlining strategies for conflict mitigation, resource management, and land utilization. The report is expected to be a major step forward in addressing the challenges facing the sector and promoting sustainable development in Nigeria.
