Poultry Business No Longer Palatable Due To Hike In Price Of Livestock Feeds, Produce And Veterinary Products As Covid-19 Continues To Take Toll - Expert

The Covid-19 Global pandemic has no doubt hampered the economy of the world in general, causing a change in tide as it concerns livestock production.

In an interview with Mrs. Oyebode, CEO Temtos Pet, Poultry and Agric store, she notably recalled the ban on maize importation in Nigeria and stated that with this development there is scarcity of maize in the country; hence an increase in price of poultry feeds.

Mrs. Oyebode, CEO, Temtos.

"With our Agricultural practices in Nigeria, If they should put all the poultry animals in the country together, the maize currently in the country would only last about 2-3 months", she explained.

She further went ahead to analyze the extent to which price of feeds and eggs have gone up.

"Depending on the size, we were selling eggs before now at 850, 800 and 750 naira per crate and we buy feeds for 3,200 or 3,250 naira per bag, but now we buy egg from farm at the rate of 1,000 naira per crate and feeds at 3,600 naira, so for you to make anything out of this you will need to increase how much you sell to your customers too", she lamented.

Speaking about sales rate, she said in her explanation that there has been a drastic reduction in sales.

"For example you are selling 10 bags of feeds in a day before and suddenly it has become 3 bags in a day, definitely something is wrong", said Mrs. Oyebode.

On veterinary products, she explained that both local and imported vet products are scarce at location at which they do buy it and they are very expensive.

"These are our experiences and the business is no longer palatable"; she said in her statement.

She went further to say she is in doubt if the government are even concerned about what the citizens are going through, she pointed out to the poor development of livestock in the country and she believes that many who are still sticking to livestock business are doing so on the sake of passion.

As at the time of filing this report all efforts to get the perspective of the relevant government representative has been abortive.
