The proposed Ministry of Livestock Development in Nigeria has received a boost from the National President of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Baba Othman-Ngelzarma. In an exclusive interview with Daniel Ayantoye, Othman-Ngelzarma emphasized the importance of the ministry in addressing the challenges facing the livestock sector in Nigeria.
The proposed ministry has been met with criticism from some quarters, with some arguing that it is a duplication of functions already handled by the Ministry of Agriculture. However, Othman-Ngelzarma disagrees, stating that the livestock sector is a vital component of the Nigerian economy and deserves dedicated attention.
"Nigeria is a country with a vast livestock population, and the sector has the potential to contribute significantly to the country's GDP," Othman-Ngelzarma said. "However, the sector has been neglected for decades, and this has led to a decline in productivity and a loss of revenue for the country."
Othman-Ngelzarma highlighted the potential benefits of the ministry, including the creation of jobs, improvement in livelihoods, and reduction in poverty. He also emphasized the need for a dedicated ministry to address the issue of farmer-herder conflict, which has been a major challenge in the country.
"The conflict between farmers and herders is a complex issue that requires a dedicated approach," Othman-Ngelzarma said. "The ministry will provide a platform for dialogue and conflict resolution, and will also work to address the root causes of the conflict, such as the destruction of farms and the loss of livelihoods."
Othman-Ngelzarma also addressed the issue of land ownership, stating that the Miyetti Allah Association is not interested in grabbing land from other communities. He emphasized that the association is committed to finding a solution that works for all parties involved.
"We are not interested in grabbing land from other communities," Othman-Ngelzarma said. "We are committed to finding a solution that works for all parties involved. We believe that the ministry will provide a platform for dialogue and conflict resolution, and will also work to address the root causes of the conflict."
On the issue of the recent quit notice issued by Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, Othman-Ngelzarma described it as a publicity stunt. He emphasized that the Miyetti Allah Association is committed to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict between farmers and herders.
"Igboho's quit notice is a publicity stunt," Othman-Ngelzarma said. "We are committed to finding a peaceful solution to the conflict between farmers and herders. We believe that dialogue and conflict resolution are the best ways to address the issue."
In conclusion, Othman-Ngelzarma emphasized the importance of the ministry in addressing the challenges facing the livestock sector in Nigeria. He emphasized that the ministry will provide a platform for dialogue and conflict resolution, and will also work to address the root causes of the conflict.
"The ministry will provide a platform for dialogue and conflict resolution, and will also work to address the root causes of the conflict," Othman-Ngelzarma said. "We believe that this is the best way to address the issue and find a peaceful solution.".
