South Korea's Heat Wave Crisis: Death Toll Rises to 14, Livestock Losses Mount

 

As the sweltering heat continues to grip South Korea, the country's interior ministry has reported a devastating increase in the death toll from this year's heat wave. The latest fatalities bring the total number of deaths to 14, with the majority of victims being elderly individuals.

On Sunday, a 71-year-old woman was found unconscious in her Seoul home and later succumbed to a heat-related illness. Tragically, another 78-year-old woman died while working on a farm in Goheung, approximately 328 kilometers south of Seoul. These two fatalities have pushed the overall death toll to 14, with the number of patients suffering from heat-related illnesses reaching 1,690.

The heat wave has also taken a devastating toll on the country's livestock industry. Between June 11 and Monday, a staggering 303,000 animals have perished due to the extreme heat, with 277,000 of those being poultry. The economic impact of these losses is likely to be significant, with many farmers struggling to recover from the devastating effects of the heat wave.

As the heat wave shows no signs of abating, most parts of the country are currently under heat wave warnings. The Korea Meteorological Administration has forecast that the heat wave may persist until at least August 15, leaving many residents feeling anxious and concerned for their safety.

In response to the crisis, authorities have implemented measures to mitigate the effects of the heat wave, including providing cooling centers and distributing relief supplies to affected areas. However, more needs to be done to protect vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and young children, who are disproportionately affected by the heat.
