The national president of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Baba Othman Ngelzarma, recently emphasized the crucial role the livestock sector plays in ensuring peace, security, and economic prosperity in Nigeria. Speaking to journalists in Jos, shortly after rescheduling the election of the MACBAN executive in Plateau state, Othman highlighted the significant contributions the sector can make to the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
According to Othman, the establishment of the Ministry of Livestock Development, which was a result of MACBAN's agitation, is a crucial step towards addressing the challenges facing the sector. He noted that the ministry will help to address issues such as insecurity, neglect, and other challenges that have hindered the growth of the sector.
Othman also drew attention to the fact that neighboring countries, such as Kenya, have successfully established ministries for livestock development, which have transformed their economies and contributed significantly to their GDP. In Kenya, for example, the livestock sector contributes around 30% to the country's GDP, compared to Nigeria's 10%. Othman lamented that Nigeria's larger population and economic potential make it even more important for the country to prioritize the development of its livestock sector.
MACBAN has been working tirelessly to ensure peace and tranquility prevail in Nigeria, and Othman emphasized that the group will continue to do so. He noted that the creation of the Ministry of Livestock Development is a significant step towards achieving this goal, and that the group will continue to work with the government to ensure the ministry is fully functional and effective.
Overall, Othman's remarks highlight the importance of the livestock sector in Nigeria's economy and the need for the government to prioritize its development. By doing so, Nigeria can follow in the footsteps of neighboring countries like Kenya and achieve greater economic prosperity.
