Tinubu Inaugurates Committee on Livestock Reforms, Appoints Prof Jega as Co-Chair"



President Bola Tinubu has taken a significant step towards addressing the challenges in Nigeria's livestock sector by inaugurating a Presidential Committee on Implementation of Livestock Reforms. The committee is tasked with finding solutions to obstacles that hinder agricultural productivity and creating new opportunities for farmers, herders, processors, and distributors in the livestock-farming value chain.


The President has appointed Professor Attahiru Jega, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as Co-Chairman of the committee. The committee is comprised of members from the public and private sectors, state governors, and other stakeholders.


In his inaugural address, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of collective effort in implementing the reforms. He urged members of the committee to put aside partisan politics and work together to achieve the committee's objectives.


The President also announced the creation of a Ministry of Livestock Development to further explore the potential of the livestock sector. He noted that the traditional method of livestock farming needs to be reviewed and repositioned with the support of stakeholders to open up new opportunities for growth and prosperity.


The committee will be supported by various government agencies, including the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, who will ensure the removal of all legal obstacles to the implementation of the reforms. The Minister of Communication, Innovation and Digital Economy will provide support with automation.


The President emphasized that the reforms will be comprehensive and collective, urging the support of all stakeholders. He noted that the dairy industry contributes significantly to nutrition and food security, and efficient cold-chain logistics is crucial in maintaining the quality and safety of perishable goods.


The committee has been tasked with finding solutions to the challenges in the livestock sector, including conflicts between farmers and herders. The President expressed his confidence that the committee will surpass expectations and bring succour to Nigerians.


The APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, was commended by the President for his initiative and leadership in assembling a team of experts to find solutions to the challenges in the livestock sector.


Overall, the inauguration of the Presidential Committee on Implementation of Livestock Reforms marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges in Nigeria's livestock sector and creating new opportunities for growth and prosperity.
